Application of wheat protein in the flame-retardant polyester fabric

In this study, wheat protein, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and urea were used as carbon, acid and nitrogen sources for intumescent flame retardant respectively, Then it was applied on the surface of the ethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric through conventional method of two nips and dips, in order to improve the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the fabric. After the treatment, the damage length was reduced to 7cm and LOI values were increased from 20.5% to 26.6%.Thermal gravimetric (TG) analysis showed that the fire-retardant treated polyester fabric decomposed in advance during the combustion process, forming intumescent char layer and increasing highly in the amount of carbon residue.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been used to observe the morphology of the surface of the fabric and carbon residue after burning flame retardant for analysing its flame retardant mechanism.
