High efficiency Flame Retardancy of Poly(phenylphosphoryl phenylenediamine) in biodegradable poly(lactic acid)
Poly(phenylphosphoryl phenylenediamine) (PPDA) was used to improve the fire safety of Poly(lactic acid). With the incorporation of 3 wt% PPDA, the limited oxygen index (LOI) value of flame retardant poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blend increased from 20.0% of neat PLA to 25.5%, and its UL-94 testing achieved V-0 rating. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) values of PLA/3wt%PPDA material were decreased from 643.7 kW/m2 and 109.1 MJ/m2 of neat PLA to 570.0 kW/m2 and 98.3 MJ/m2, respectively, and the char residue yield of PLA/3wt%PPDA material was increased from 1.5% of neat PLA to 4.2%.The high efficient fire safety of PPDA in PLA is mainly attributed to that the combination of the decomposed phosphorous-containing radical inhibition of PPDA and inert gases in the gas phase and the barrier action of the formed char layer. The addition of less than 3 wt% of PPDA has little influence on the mechanical properties of PLA.The high-efficiency flame retardant PLA materials have very wide application prospect in electrical case, automobile interior, insulating foam materials, 3D printing materials.
