Logging Evaluation of Bitumen Intervals in a Carbonate Reservoir,Case Study in the Y Oilfield, Middle East Area
The bitumen intervals, which were drilled at Y oilfield of Middle east area, has strong plasticity and poor stability. The bitumen often reduces drilling efficiency, as it flows into the wellbore, and even cause the engineering accident, i.e.it restricts the development of carbonate reservoirs. This paper compares the differences of geological features and logs response between conventional carbonate reservoir and the bitumen intervals, it also discusses the methodology used to distinguish the heavy oil bitumen from the solid and semi-solid (no flow) bitumen. The integration of the core and test data as well as log response analyses highlights the typical bitumen interval has high content of clay and natural gamma radioactive, low uranium free gamma, and poor permeability. Those characteristics and GR-KTH intersection can be used to detect the bitumen.Conventional porosity logs, Poissons ratio, the P & S-wave velocity ratio and the wave impedance, calculated from dipole acoustic log, can be used to identify the heavy oil bitumen.Based on the log interpretation and the regional structure analysis, the origin and distribution of the bitumen interval can be predicted.Implementation of log evaluation allows better solving the detection and distribution problems of bitumen intervals, allows better understanding of similar carbonate reservoir with the bitumen intervals, and also to helps in enhancing development efficiency and the drilling safety in similar carbonate reservoirs both in domestic and abroad.
