Numerical Simulation Study on Mechanical Properties of Transmission Conductors

Steel core forming aluminum strand is a new type of transmission conductor. In this paper, three dimensional fine finite element (FE) models of the steel core forming aluminum strand and aluminum conductor steel reinforced (ACSR), in which the friction and contact between the steel core and aluminum wires are taken into account, are set up by means of the ABAQUS/CAE.The FE analyses of the two models under quasi-static tension were carried out with the ABAQUS software, and the deformation and stress distribution are analyzed.Based on the numerical results, the Von-Mises stress distribution, equivalent tensile stiffness, contact pressure as well as the theoretical stress concentration factors of these two types of conductors with different structures are analyzed and compared. It is concluded that (1) the tensile stiffness of the two types of conductors are nearly the same;(2) under the same tension force, the maximum contact pressure of steel core forming aluminum strand decreases by several times and the theoretical stress intensity concentration decreases a little compared to the ACSR;(3) the stress distribution of steel core forming aluminum strand is more uniform;(4) the mechanical properties of the new type conductor, steel core forming aluminum strand, are better than those of the traditional conductor, ACSR.
