RESEARCH AND APPLICATION OF UHPC-BASED HIGH PERFORMANCE BRIDGE STRUCTURES IN CHINA
In China, great achievements have been made in the field of bridge engineering.However, some common issues are still unsolved.For steel bridges, orthotropic steel decks are susceptible to fatigue cracking and asphalt overlays are prone to premature damage;for long-span prestressed concrete bridges, main girders are inveitable to develop crack and excessive deflection;while for steel-concrete composite bridges, the span length is limited by the self weight of main girders, and concrete decks are inclined to cracking at negative moment zones.To overcome these bottlenecks, the research team at Hunan University proposed a serial of high performance bridge structures basing on UHPC.Four types of high performance bridge structures were proposed: 1)steel-STC lightweight composite deck, where STC (Super Toughness Concrete) represents a modified UHPC with enhanced tensile strength and toughness;2) steel-UHPC lightweight composite girder, which is suitable for long-span composite bridges;3) thin-wall UHPC girder bridge with closely spaced diaphragms, in which only the longitudinal prestress is required;and 4) UHPC and steel-UHPC composite girder bridges suitable for prefabricated construction.During the past eight years, over six hundreds specimens have been tested.This paper highlights the expeimental research and field applications of the high performance bridge structures.
