SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE MIXTURES USING HIGH VOLUME OF FLY ASH IN VIETNAM

Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is one of the new generation concretes, which has been researched and developed for about 30 years.UHpC has superior properties such as high flowability, high tensile/flexural/compressive strength, abrasion and impact resistance, low permeability and high durability.UHPC is expected to have many potential applications for construction structures. However, UHPC composition has a disadvantage that its commonly contains a very large amount of cement, i.e.approximately 1 ton of cement per 1 m3 of UHPC, as cement is costly and the production of cement emits large volume of greenhouse gases. The large volume of cement is considered to be a major impact on the sustainable development of UHPC.Replacement of cement by fly ash in UHPC composition is really necessary in Vietnam because the fly ash emissions from thermal power plants are very large in recent years. This has the double benefit of enhancing the applicability of UHPC as it reduces the amount of cement used and also reduces the amount of fly ash dumped in landfills near the coal-burnt thermal power plants in Vietnam. This paper presents the results of research on the development of UHPC mixtures using fly ash content with different cement replacement levels up to 70% by mass. The experimental results show that UHPC using a combination of 10% silica fume and 50% fly ash provides good workability, fast strength development up to 135 MPa after 28 days under normal curing condition.
