A System Dynamics Analysis of Online Travel Carbon Footprint
Thanks to the increasing popularity of smart mobile devices, online travel has been growing steadily over the past years, enhancing the development of tourism economy while increasing carbon footprint at the same time.Therefore, its necessary to locate the major sources of carbon emissions in online travel, promoting its sustainable development.Some modern technologies such as Internet and mobile communication technologies provide an effective means to reduce online travel carbon emissions.In the context that energy efficiency has become a key factor affecting the development of the tourism industry, low-carbon travel naturally attracts a growing concern from both researchers and the tourism industry.This paper tries to study the carbon footprint of online travel based on a system dynamics model.The simulation results revealed that among primary sources of online travel carbon emissions, transportation and hotels had significant effects on the carbon footprint of online travel.
