Silk Fabric Protection Obtained via Chemical Conjugation Transglutaminase and Silk Fibroin Reinforcement

Historic silk fabric is an important part of Chinese precious cultural heritage and its protection has always been a major problem.Transglutaminase (TGase) and sodium caseinate (SC), composed of protein, were used to reinforce silk fabrics. The reinforcement mechanism is that TGase catalyzes SC form macromolecular polymers by self-assembly in the pores of silk fabrics, resulting in cross-linking between silk fibers.Thereafter, silk fibroin (SF) was sprayed on the surface of silk fabric and reinforced the cross-linking structure.Compared to untreated fabrics, the weight gain rate of treated fabrics was remarkably improved.Meanwhile, the breaking stress and strain of the treated silk fabric were increased by 16.7% and 7.14%, respectively, when the SF concentration is 1%.Within the range of acceptable color difference for cultural protection, the results indicated that the method does not affect the color of the silk fabric. The treated silk fabric showed enhanced ultraviolet (UV)absorption, better heat aging resistance and UV resistance.Enzymatic reactions and film adhesion are considered to reasonable for the reinforcement of silk fabrics.
