Structural and Mechanical Properties of Silk Biomaterials Plasticized by Glycerol

Much attention has been paid to the structure and properties of silk fibroin material for an extension of application in biomedical field, in which secondary structure regulation is one of the most important works. We blended the glycerol into SF films and the structural change of silk fibroin/glycerol blend films with different concentrations was investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results indicated that addition of glycerol exhibited complex impacts on the secondary structure of SF film. With increasing glycerol content, the β-sheet content of the films untreated increased, while that the mechanical strength of films decreased and ductility increased. The molecular interactions of silk materials plasticized using glycerol were studied, as these materials provide options for biodegradable and flexible protein-based textile materials.
