The Effect of Alkali Treatment on the Characterization of Apocynum Venetum Bast Fibers and Its Weibull Distribution Prediction
Apocynum venetum(AV), which is famous as the King of wild fibers in Xinjiang Province in China due to its excellent properties.Herein, the AV bast fibers were treated with 2%, 5% and 7% NaOH solution, and the properties of the AV bast fibers before and after treatment were characterized by the mechanical test, scanning electron micrographs (SEM),fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).It was found that the tensile strength of the treated AV bast fibers was significantly improved in comparison with the untreated fibers. The average tensile strength of the untreated group was 1.03 cN/dtex, while the average tensile strengths of the treated groups were 1.70cN/dtex, 1.73cN/dtex,and 1.42cN/dtex, respectively.Especially, the failure probability of the AV bast fibers agreed well with two parameter Weibull distribution model through the statistical analysis. The X-ray diffraction results showed that the degree of crystallinity was changed due to the alkali treatment. In addition, the SEM pictures showed that most of the impurities on the surface of the AV bast fibers can be removed in the 5% group, which was consistent with the results of the FTIR test.
