Evaluation Surface Characteristics of Needle-Punched Nonwoven Polypropylene Sorbents

The performance of needle-punched nonwoven polypropylene oil sorbents depend on surface properties like contact angle, surface free energy, wicking, and oil sorption capacity were investagted. The surface characteristics of the polypropylene nonwoven were determined by using the sessile drop and captive bubble methods, while the surface free energy was assessed using the basis of Owens-Wendt-Rabel and Kaelble (OWRK) method.Hence, the analysis revealed that highest water contact angle value (θ =161.1 °), lowest surface free energy (26.9 mN/m) were recorded by sample F compared with other samples. The investigation manifested a significant influence of oil properties in oil sorption performance. The experimental results showed that the highest oil sorption rates of sorbents to Gasoline oil and soybean oil belong to sample B was 7.6g/g and 7.2g/g, respectively.
