Fabrication and Properties of Apocynum Venetum Bast Fibers Reinforced Polylactic Acid Composites
This research was based on the fabrication and assessment of biodegradable Natural Fiber Composites (NFC) which possesses good mechanical properties potentially applicable to the bio-medical textiles, automobiles, civil engineering and cosmetics. This research was carried out by using extracted bast fibers from Apocynum Venetum (AV) plant as a reinforcement material for composites, the polymer matrix selection for composites was Poly Lactic Acid (PLA).There were two groups of composites including untreated and treated AV bast fibers reinforced PLA composites. The tensile strength both groups was analyzed following ASTM D3039 standard, in which the untreated AV bast fibers reinforced composite showed 80.25MPa while 2% alkali treated fibers reinforced composite showed 103.67MPa tensile strength. The bending test has been done by following ASTM D790 standard for both groups of samples, which showed 86.38MPa and 195.02MPa bending strengths respectively. The morphological analysis of composites for fiber-matrix adhesion characteristics has been obtained by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
