Tensile and Flexural Properties of Sisal Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Composite: For Furniture Manufacture
Recently, natural fibers are increasingly replacing synthetic fibers as polymer composite reinforcement due to their benefits of low density, environmental friendly, low cost and high specific mechanical performance. This study aims at manufacturing and characterizing sisal reinforced unsaturated polyester composite.Sisal fibers were sun-dried after extraction and characterized on their strength, elongation and fineness. The composites were manufactured by combination of hand lay-up technique and compression molding by stacking woven sisal fabrics at different stacking sequence (0°, 90°, 90°/0°, + 45°/-45°) but equal number of layers. The tensile and bending strength of the manufactured composite was tested. The results showed that stacking sequence greatly influences the strength properties of the composite.Tensile and bending strength results of 0° stacked composite were 67MPa and 64MPa,respectively.The produced composite was used in the manufacture of tabletop proving that it can replace conventional timber in furniture manufacture.
