Influence of Polymerization Conditions on Grafting of Methyl Methacrylate onto Native Chitin for Melting Spinning

Since native chitins exhibit poor thermoplasticity, they cannot meet the requirement of melt spinning and have limited industrial application as thermoplastic fibers. In order to endow the chitins with good thermoplasticity, various amounts of vinyl monomers-methyl methacrylate (MMA) were grafted onto molecular chains of the chitins. In this research, effects of polymerization conditions, such as concentration and molar ratio of initiators, pH, temperature and time on grafting parameters, i.e.,conversion of monomer to polymer, grafting percentage and grafting efficiency, were studied.MMA was proved to be successfully grafted onto the molecular chains of the chitin and appropriate graft polymerization conditions were obtained. It was found that the grafted chitins developed exhibited favorable thermoplasticity and were expected to be suitable for melt spinning.
