Bolt loosening detection using vibro-ultrasonic modulation

  This paper presents a preliminary study of a bolt loosening detection technique using vibro-ultrasonic modulation(VAM).The technique is based on a physical phenomenon that a high frequency probing excitation(fH)is modulated by a low frequency pumping excitation(fL).This study experimentally investigates the relationship between the degree of bolt loosening and sideband generation.A nonlinear index β is used to quantify the sideband generations around the probing wave frequency,which reflects the level of contact nonlinearity.β is found to be quantitatively related to the residual torque after the bolt is loosened to a certain degree.
