Influence of mass ratio on the effectiveness of using PIP system for VIV control

Pipe-in-Pipe(PIP)systems have been more and more widely used in the deep and ultradeep waters due to their favourable thermal insulation capacity.By taking advantage of the special structural layout of the PIP system, the conventional PIP system has been revised by the authors to form a tuned mass damper(TMD)system to control the earthquake and vortex induced vibrations(VIV).The mass ratio between the inner and outer pipes therefore may significantly influence the efficiency of the proposed method. However, this effect has never been reported in the literature. This paper aims to carry out three-dimensional(3D)Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI)analyses to investigate the effect of mass ratio on the efficiency of using PIP concept for VIV control.
