An improved empirical wavelet transform approach for modal identification of structures

This paper proposes an improved Empirical Wavelet Transform(EWT)approach, which can be used for modal identification of structures.Measured dynamic responses from structures under ambient vibrations are used. This improved EWT approach includes two steps.Standardized Auto-Regressive(SAR)power spectrum of the measured response is calculated in the first step to define the boundaries of frequency components in EWT.The second step is to decompose the measured response into a number of Intrinsic Mode Functions(IMFs),which will be used to identify structural modal information such as natural frequencies and damping ratios.Numerical studies are conducted to identify the modal information of a spatial frame structure under the ambient excitations. The modal identification results demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively and accurately decompose the vibration responses and identify the structural modal parameters under operational conditions.
