Estimation of bridge modal frequencies from the vibration measurement of a moving vehicle by using blind source separation technique

The indirect bridge modal identification using vehicle vibration measurements has been a very attractive research area in recent years.A sensor is installed on the vehicle to capture the bridge response information when the vehicle is moving on the bridge. This indirect modal identification approach requires no bridge closure and onsite instrumentation, which is convenient and cost-effective for structural health monitoring on the existing bridges. The vehicle dynamic response consists of components associated with the bridge surface roughness, vehicle and bridge vibration. The surface roughness makes the vehicle vibrate at the vehicle modal frequency and its corresponding component dominates the vehicle dynamic response. It makes the bridge related frequencies less visible in the spectrum of the vehicle response.A singular spectrum analysis(SSA)based blind modal identification method is proposed to decompose the single set of vehicle dynamic measurement into different components. These components include bridge-related responses and bridge modal parameters are obtained from these components.Numerical simulations are presented to show the performance of the proposed method for the indirect bridge modal identification. The proposed method is also validated using actual dynamic measurements of a cable-stay bridge.
