Design of concentrated seismic control building by soft-first-story system using frtvmds

Soft-First-Story Structural System is a structural system where the stiffness of the first story of a building is made smaller than the rest, and by placing dampers at the first story, the overall deformation of the building is decreased. The performance of the system is comparable to placing dampers at each floor and has no influence of the architectural plans of the upper stories. However, when typical oil dampers are used in Soft-First-Story Structural Systems, the energy dissipated by the first floor increases dramatically and shear-links or seismic walls are required to withstand the reaction forces. This creates problems for the architecture plan.A new Soft-First-Story Structural System is proposed using FRTVMDs.By tuning the FRTVMDs close to the first natural period of the building. The dampers supporting members do not require high stiffness, and smaller cross-sectional areas can be used, giving the architectural plan more flexibility.A seismic response analysis is conducted on an existing building to evaluate the effectiveness of this system.
