Study on a new type of composite tuned liquid damper

Tuned liquid dampers(TLD)are widely used as passive control devices to mitigate structural vibrations in high winds or earthquakes. It has been well known that the frequency ratio of the structural frequency to damper frequency has a crucial influence on the effectiveness of a TLD,and an error in frequency ratio may result in a significant reduction in efficiency. To overcome such shortcoming of a single damper, and to make full use of the empty space in between the columns of a TLCD,this study proposes a new type of tuned liquid damper(CTLD),which is composed of a tuned sloshing damper(TSD)and a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD).Dynamic and static experiments are conducted in this study to understand the basic properties of the structural model.Several cases with different structure frequencies are used to demonstrate availability of the proposed damper. Also, image processing technology is used to identify the frequency ratio of the CTLD.
