Experimental research on development of new oil damper with spring for architectural vibration control and analytical research about actual building

Japan is one of the countries facing with earthquakes and suffered from them many times.Earthquakes with more than magnitude 6.0 occurred 326 times in Japan from 2003 to 2013,which accounts for 20 percent of the earthquakes in the world. When earthquakes occur, various systems are designed to defend the buildings. To reduce damage of public buildings,condo-minium and factories by the earthquakes,Oil Damper Vibration Control System has been ap-plied to the buildings recently in Japan. The buildings through seismic retrofit inspection were normally added braces or oil dampers to improve stiffness or damping. In this case, each of them must be installed to a different frame, and openings would be restricted for this reason. This study aims to develop a new oil damper combined with viscoelastic damper and friction damper. This new oil damper can be installed in a frame to increase stiffness and damping of the building and is expected to achieve high absorption energy capacity. The structure of the viscoelastic damper and the friction damper,if the applied load is equal to or less than the sliding load set by the friction damper, the viscoelastic damper will bear the load, and if not,the friction damper will slip and bear the load. This paper explains experiments of performance confirmation of the viscoelastic damper and the friction damper, and seismic response analysis of an actual building with the new oil dampers. The experiments study on shear stiffness, dependence and material strength of the viscoelastic damper, and dependence and durability of the friction damper. The analysis refers to an absorption capacity of energy and usefulness of the new oil damper. As a result, the stiff-ness of the building is increased, and the response is reduced due to the new oil damper.
