Developing neutral equilibrium control device to enhance seismic capacity of building

  To promote the earthquake-resisting capacity of building after excitation of earthquake,Neutral Equilibrium Control Device is proposed in this study,composed of unstable control mechanism and stable control mechanism in series to form a Neutral Equilibrium Control Device.The equation of motion for building with this proposed device is derived based on the real seismic proof behaviour of this device.Then,the influence of gain coefficients of displacement and velocity for building with this proposed device under the situation of no time delay and time delay are deduced to get the effective mass,damping and stiffness respectively.In order to find the effective range of each gain coefficient,a shear building is applied to simulate and analyze the structural displacements,relative and absolute acceleration responses and base shear responses of building under control of this proposed device with no time delay and time delay.Analysis results show that this proposed device can synchronize with the building deformation to initiate the lateral force to balance story drift.These results also reveal that the structural displacements,relative and absolute acceleration responses and base shear responses of building with this proposed control device without time delay are close to zero.The analysis results of this device with time delay display that:(1)time delay under 0.005 seconds can still perform effectively seismic control effect;(2)when time delay within 0.01~0.05 seconds,this device should match with appropriate gain coefficients of displacement and velocity to perform seismic absorption effect;(3)when time delay exceeds 0.05 seconds,control fail of this device is happened to cause structural instability and even lead to structural destruction.The practicality of this Neutral Equilibrium Control Device with appropriate gain coefficients to enhance seismic capability of building has been verified by analysis results.
