Electromagnetic inertial mass damper for vibration control of cable with sag

To enhance the control performance of a stay cable with a viscous damper,an electromagnetic inertial mass damper(EIMD)with adjustable inertial mass and damping coefficient was developed based on the displacement amplification of ball screw mechanism, the two node inertial mass element and the electromagnetic damping technology. The general dynamic characteristics of a sag cable with an EIMD installed close to the cable end were theoretically obtained, and parametric analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of inertial mass, damping coefficient and cable sag on control performance.A series of experiments were performed to evaluate vibration mitigation performance of the EIMD through the first two modal supplemental damping ratios of a model cable. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that control performance of a cable with an EIMD is much better than that of conventional passive viscous dampers, and theoretically predicted modal damping ratios of the cable taking into account the cable sag agree well with those identified from experimental results.
