Semi-active isolation of an existing Italian highway bridge using seismic early warning information

A hybrid control strategy based on the use of friction pendulum isolators(FPS)and magnetorheological dampers(MR)driven by a seismic early warning system(SEWS)is employed to retrofit a case study highway bridge, really existing and not able to resist seismic actions. An Italian regional control algorithm has been adopted to calibrate the MR devices according to the preliminary information of the incoming earthquake given by the SEWS.In order to reduce transmission of forces between decks and piers,FPS isolators have been interposed. The use of adaptive MR devices provided further(smart passive)source of damping to the structure,so strongly limiting demand of bending to piers,of deformation to isolators and also solving pounding problems. This work shows how semi-active control can exploit SEWS information so as to strongly reduce the seismic demand to a real case study structure.
