Semi-active stiffness-controllable mass damper system with least energy control method

  Vibration control using a tuned mass damper(TMD)is an effective technique that has been verified using analytical methods and experiments.It has been applied in mechanical,automotive,and structural applications.However,the damping of a TMD cannot be adjusted in real time.An excessive mass damper stroke may be introduced when the mass damper is subjected to a seismic excitation whose frequency content is within its operation range.The semi-active tuned mass damper(SATMD)has been proposed to solve this problem.The parameters of an SATMD can be adjusted in real time based on the measured structural responses and an appropriate control law.In this study,a semi-active mass damper called Stiffness Controllable Mass Damper(SCMD)with a semi-active control law named Least Energy Control Method(LECM)is proposed in this paper.The stiffness of the SCMD can be adjusted to minimize the seismic input energy transmitted to structural system in real time,and it is different from the traditional damper to dissipate the transmitted energy.To evaluate the control performance of the SCMD,the seismic responses of the SCMD is compared with the passive TMD and the Hybrid Mass Damper(HMD)whose control law is similar to LECM.The simulation results show the SCMD without damping can adjust its stiffness in real-time to suppress the damper stroke requirement of the passive TMD.
