Development of a database framework for modelling damaged bridges under multiple hazards

A bridge can fail for many reasons, including internal causes(design errors, material defects or aging, insufficient capacity, construction errors, etc.),external causes(multiple hazard or extreme events such as earthquake, scour, flood, wind, vessel collision, fire, etc.)and their various combinations. There are several existing information sources such as the National Bridge Inventory(NBI)and New York State Department of Transportation(NYSDOT)databases,as well as other collected or summary reports on bridge damage and failures. However, these resources do not contain enough information to provide a fundamental basis for further improvement of the current bridge design code in the United States(i.e.,American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials(AASHTO)Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD)Bridge Design Specifications). Thus,a study was carried out to establish a comprehensive database of damaged bridges(DDB)based on bridge damage information available in the open literature. The proposed database integrates existing bridge information sources with new information to provide a uniform database for modelling of damaged bridges. The database includes the following information: bridge design information(design documents, construction, drawings, etc.); environmental(geographical and weather)conditions; hazards information and traffic conditions; bridge damage and loss information(damage positions and damage modes, etc.)and economic and environmental impact issues. For the purpose of improving LRFD design specifications,it is desirable to establish certain standard measures for different hazards,to develop a commonly understandable and accepted format for effective communications to facilitate future datamining of bridge failures.
