Numerical Study of the Response of a Base Isolated Structure Using Low-Cost Devices
In this study results of Response History Analyses performed to assess the seismic behavior of a low-rise residential building base isolated with Recycled Rubber – Fiber Reinforced Bearings(RR-FRBs)are discussed. For the analyses, recycled rubber isolators have been modelled using the bilinear and the Bouc–Wen models of hysteresis. The bearings under investigation are made gluing layers of a recycled rubber-like material together with layers of carbon fibers. These devices constitute an affordable solution for the protection of low-cost buildings in earthquake prone regions of developing countries. Results of the numerical simulations were found to be in good agreement with experimental findings, suggesting the feasibility of using simple to implement hysteresis models for the prediction of the seismic response of a RR-FRBs base isolated building.
