Investigation on a vertical isolation system with quasi-zero stiffness property

  This paper presents an analytical study on a quasi-zero-stiffness(QZS)vertical isolation system composed of a disk spring and spiral spring in parallel.First,the static characteristics of the isolation system are investigated including the force-displacement relation and the effect of design parameters on the mechanical properties.A single degree of freedom motion controlling equation of vertical isolation system is established.Considering harmonic force excitation on the mass and harmonic displacement excitation at the base,the frequency response and transmissibility curves are derived using harmonic balance method.To verify the accuracy of the theoretical results and to observe the frequency jumping phenomenon demonstrated in the transfer functions,numerical solutions are calculated and compared.Based on the static analysis,a vertically base isolated multi-story building is designed.The super-structure is a 7-story concrete frame building with the vertical stiffness of the isolation layer designed to be approximately zero.The numerical model is established in OpenSees software,and the isolation system is realized by implementing a new uniaxial material.Time history comparison calculations between base-fixed model and isolated model are conducted to evaluate the isolation effect.The building models are excited using both seismic wave and a set of field recorded transit vibration data with a higher frequency range between 20Hz~100Hz.It is concluded that the proposed QZS vertical isolation system can be effective for both seismic and metro vibration.The seismic actions and the transit induced vibration on the structure can be reduced and the overturning effect of the super-structure can be controlled under considered earthquake levels.
