Structural vibration control using inerter-based devices:a review of the state of the art
Although appending an auxiliary mass element to a structure has been widely employed as a passive structural vibration control approach, carrying and situating such a huge mass to the top of building possess undeniable structural and architectural limitations, especially in seismic excitations. To overcome the mentioned restrictions,a novel two-terminal mechanical device called inerter is introduced as an alternative to mass element wherein one terminal is grounded.Due to the inerters versatile characteristic, generating a massive apparent mass by rotating an actual lightweight mass,it can be utilized as a passive structural vibration control device. To accurately clarify the behavior of the inerter within the structural control methods, this article presents a brief review on the recent developments of inerterbased devices. It certified that inerter-based dampers have significant potential for improving the structural seismic behavior.
