The mechanical response of magnetorheological dampers over time:an experimental investigation
For some kind of applications, dampers based on the use of magnetorheological(MR)fluids work frequently. This is the case when they are adopted for suspensions for vehicles and trains,or for brakes, for vibration control of cable-stayed bridges subjected to wind. However, when adopted for earthquake engineering applications,MR devices might not be used for most of the hosting structures life until an earthquake occurs. How do they behave when called to give a few seconds long effective response after years of quiescence? The results of a ten years long experimental campaign are presented and discussed herein. They show the evolution over time of dissipating capability, force reaction and response promptness of two MR dampers designed and manufactured in Germany. Some of the undesired effects do to ageing are reversible, almost they can be cancelled after the first few cycles of the device.Others, related to the oxidation of ferro-based particles, are not reversible, even if the performance decay due to them, expressed in percentage term in respect to the time zero behavior,is limited to a few points.
