Control of wind-induced effects of a bridge deck based on passive vortex generators

Since the high efficiency of 3D spanwise-varying control method on suppressing vortex shedding behind the bluff body,a new passive control device,spanwise-distributed passive vortex generator(PVG),was proposed to attenuate the vortex shedding of a bridge model.Pairs of PVGs were arranged on the lower surface of the bridge in spanwise direction to generate streamwise vortices and perturb the two-dimensional spanwise vortex shedding.Numerical simulation demonstrates that under the PVG control, the mean drag and fluctuating aerodynamic forces of the bridge model with PVG are apparently reduced, which indicates that the Kármán vortices are suppressed. In addition, dynamic mode decomposition(DMD)reveals that the PVG can redistribute the energy spectrum. The PVG transport the energy from the mode associated with regular vortex shedding to the other low frequency modes.
