Vibrations of two shallow cables with a cross-tie

Connecting neighboring cables by cross-ties to formulate a cable network is known as the most promising strategy for vibration control of long cables in cable stayed bridges.Understanding the system dynamics and optimizing the cross-tie parameters for best performance are still challenging owing to the system complexity. Most of the existing studies have been conducted based on the taut cable model. However, dynamics of long cables is affected by the sag effect which can impair the control effect largely. To investigate such effect,an analytical method based on the linear shallow cable theory is developed in this paper.Particularly,a twin cable system with a viscoelastic cross-tie is investigated in details.Focus is placed on the system modes which are affected by the cable sag.The sag induced coupling vibrations of the cable segments and the sag effect on the modal coupling and veering of the cable systems are demonstrated by parametric analysis.
