Wavelet-based estimation of evolutionary spectra and application to field measurement typhoon process

A method of applying wavelet transform to estimate the evolutionary spectra(ES)of nonstationary processes was proposed from the viewpoint that the continuous wavelet transform of a non-stationary process at a given time instant can be interpreted as the Fourier transform of a new non-stationary process. Then, the ES of the non-stationary process that is represented as a weighted sum of the squared moduli of the time-dependent wavelets was derived. The weighted coefficients, which are related to the wavelet coefficients and the overlapping area of two shifted wavelets, are frequency-dependent function. The efficiency of the proposed wavelet-based method was demonstrated by numerical samples. The Morlet transform was found as the best choice for ES estimation due to its high time and frequency resolution. The nonstationary intensity and stationary frequency of the whole process of field measurement Typhoon Masta were investigated by the ES estimation.
