Damper Performance under Winds:A Real-Time Hybrid Simulation-based Evaluation

Dampers, such as tuned mass damper(TMD),have been widely used in mitigating windinduced vibration of high-rise buildings,long-span bridges, and other structures.Wind tunnel testing is the most widely used technique to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of windinduced responses.Hence, current damper performance evaluation heavily relies on wind tunnel tests with small-scale damper models, which bring in higher uncertainties and requires further extensive on-site tuning process for their full-scale implementations. To address the above issues, this paper presents a novel real-time hybrid simulation(RTHS)platform for evaluating damper performance in reducing wind-induced response on flexible structures. It effectively integrates the full-scale numerical model of damping devices with reduced-scale wind-tunnel testing environment via the use of actuators and sensors.By integrating wind tunnel testing environment with experimentally validated damper models, the proposed platform is capable to provide accurate evaluation of damper performance in reducing wind-induced responses. In this paper,a TMD model is integrated with a wind-tunnel tested building model to demonstrate the capability of the proposed RTHS platform. The accuracy of the evaluation is shown by the comparison between the response of the overall system and that obtained from the RTHS platform.
