Rail inspection by using Laser-EMAT technology

  Laser generation and EMAT(electromagnetic acoustic transducer)detection were combined as a hybrid ultrasonic technique for the inspection of various defects in the rail.To evaluate the capability of laser-EMAT testing technique,rail samples with five kinds of artificial defects were prepared,including the surface crack,surface vertical hole,surface oblique hole,bolt hole crack and web hole.The surface flaws were detected by mode conversion between Surface wave and shear wave,while the internal flaws were inspected by the diffraction of shear wave.The technique of noise suppression based on wavelet softthreshold method(WSTM)was introduced to improve the testing accuracy and signal to noise ratio(SNR).Experimental results have shown the errors of testing these defects were all less than 10%,which proves laser-EMAT technique is very suitable to non-destructive assess the rail.
