Structural Dynamics Characterization Using Video Measurements and Phase-Based Motion Estimation(PME)

As a non-contact measurement technique, optical measurement systems are being employed more widely in recent year for both academic research as well as industrial applications.Digital Cameras are able to record sequence of images(videos)of the vibrating structures in real-time and provide full-field information with respect to the resolution of the camera.Within this paper, high speed video cameras are utilized to record the sequence of images from vibration structures and,the phase-based motion estimation(PME)and the phase based motion magnification technique are employed for structural dynamics characterization. It has been shown that this methodology is able to identify the dynamic behavior of structures due to the external loadings. Results for two different case studies are presented. The first case study is a simple laboratory scale cantilevered beam and the second case study is an industrial 2.3 m wind turbine blade. Both case studies are indicating that the methodology is able to identify in-plane motion patterns and mode shapes. This approach provides visual intuitions of the operating deflection shapes(ODS)of the structure.Although the methodology is limited to in plane motions,it can make the structural dynamics identification procedure easier and faster for structures in which merely the in-plane motion is significant.
