Long-term vibration and temperature monitoring on a steel plate girder bridge

For reliable performance of vibration-based damage detection,it is crucially important to distinguish abnormal changes in modal parameters caused by structural damage from environmental-induced fluctuation. This paper addresses a long-term vibration monitoring conducted on a simply supported steel plate girder bridge and presents strategies of modelling temperature effects on modal frequency. From the data measured from 10 accelerometers installed on the bridge, frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes of the bridge were identified from bridge vibrations by means of a Fast Bayesian FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)method.Meanwhile, with temperatures measured at different locations of the bridge, regression models are applied to formulate the correlation that quantifies the temperature effect on modal frequencies variation.
