Bayesian hypothesis testing for bridge health monitoring

This study discusses a method for practical bridge health monitoring.Bayesian hypothesis testing is proposed, aiming at efficient inspection based on vibration monitoring. The proposed method consists of the following steps: Firstly,a Bayesian inference method provides a posterior distribution of parameters composing a multivariate autoregressive model of bridge vibrations.Secondly, based on the posterior distribution,damage-sensitive features related to the modal properties of the bridge are extracted.Thirdly,Bayesian hypothesis testing is formulated considering the marginal likelihood based on probability distributions of the damage-sensitive features under hypotheses related to integrity of the bridge.Feasibility of the proposed method is examined utilizing field experiment data in which three different levels of artificial damage were introduced to two tension members of a steel truss bridge.Observations demonstrated that the proposed method successfully detected the three damage levels.
