Numerical study on effects of traffic flow patterns and road surface roughness on bridge dynamic responses
Random variations in axle loads on the bridges, which due to variations in the interaction of vehicle types, load, speeds of traffic flow, and surface roughness of the bridges, significantly influence on the bridge dynamic responses. This study aims to verify the effects of varying dynamic components of traffic loads on the bridge deck responses with respect to the traffic flow variations and the surface roughness by the numerical analysis.Authors are developing a scheme to calculate the traffic dynamic responses using a finite element(FE)model of an existing steel box girder bridge. The random axle loads under various traffic flow and surface condition are represented by the time histories of transient input forces on the deck nodes of the FE model. The arrival time of assigned forces in two consecutive nodes along bridge lanes is determined by the vehicle speeds. The combination effects of associated traffic features such as vehicle types, the existence of multiple vehicles, traffic volume, and surface roughness on mid-span deck accelerations are then carried out using modal superposition method in transient time history analysis.
