Human shaker for dynamic test of civil structures

Dynamic test of as-built civil structures is a common practice to learn the dynamic properties of real structures,to improve accuracy of prediction methods and to update analysis models adopted at the design stage.Large, cumbersome and power-needed mechanical shakers are generally necessary in the test to dynamically excite a structure. This test methodology, however, may not be tenable for low-rise,medium and small size buildings due to various reason such as budget, limited installation space and power supply issue.Considering the fact that human can be treated as an intelligent and optimized mechanical system. This study investigates using human,by his/her activities like walking, jumping, running and bouncing,as a mechanical shaker for dynamic test of civil structures.Experiments using force plates were first conducted to develop relationship between humaninduced forces and acceleration measurements of intelligent wearable sensors. The dynamic properties,e.g.natural frequencies and modal damping ratios, can be identified by measured frequency response functions.Field test of an eight-storey steel frame structure demonstrates the application of the human shaker idea.
