Application of AE technique in steel bridge web gap distortion-induced fatigue performance monitoring
Acoustic emission(AE)technique can effectively monitor initiation and propagation behaviors of fatigue cracks in-time without damages to steel bridges,which is a significant supplement to traditional fatigue performance monitoring methods.In this paper,the fullscale fatigue test was carried out to explore the fatigue mechanism of the steel bridge web gap distortion-induced detail.Sensors were arranged to monitor the stress d istribution and the out-of-plane distortion at web gaps in the process of fatigue test,and the commercial AE sensors were also applied to monitor the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in web gaps combined with manual observation.The crack propagation behaviors were analysed based on typical AE signals caused in initiation and propagation of the cracks at steel bridge web gap distortion-induced fatigue details.It was learned that high fatigue stress caused by out-of-plane distortion occurred at web-to-stiffener weld toes in steel bridge web gaps,and fatigue cracks could initiate at this detail easily.When fatigue cracks turned into the stage of instability propagation,it was obtained intensive AE signals,strains and displacement changes.Study in this paper indicated that the AE technique can effectively monitor the fatigue performance of steel bridge web gap distortion-induced details.
