Specific features of deformation of the elements of metal flange connection between a beam and a column

  Flange connections are critical elements of metal structures.They determine to a great extent the rigidity and strength of the structures as a whole.The difficulty of estimating the stress-strain state in the elements of the flanged joints is associated with the following factors: the three-dimensional geometry of the mated parts; the need to take into account the contact interaction in bolted joints at the stages of structure erection and operation; the necessity of mathematical modeling of the deformation process in the framework of inelasticity theory.The first factor can easily be overcome with the use of finite element software,whereas the other two require experimental and theoretical studies,which could provide reliable basis for mathematical modeling of the stress-strain state in the elements of the flange connection.In this paper,we present the results of experimental and theoretical studies,which were made to evaluate the deformation behavior of the elements of metal,beam-to-column flange connection.The experimental investigations involved elastic and inelastic deformations of the samples,leading to their complete failure.The process of sample loading was accompanied by registration of the displacements at characteristic points.Relative deformations were measured at the points of the greatest concentration of stresses and strains.Such a set of quantities measured on different scales most accurately characterizes the interrelation of the deformation processes in different elements of the sample,especially when the deformation becomes inelastic.The theoretical studies focused on the development of a mathematical model,which will allow an adequately description of the distribution of elastic and inelastic stress-strain states in the elements of flange connection.
