A novel method for crack monitoring of concrete structures
Crack monitoring, which could be crucial to evaluate the status of structural damage,is one of the most challenging issues in the field of structural health monitoring. In this paper,a novel crack monitoring method named smart film is proposed.Theory, experiments and practical application of smart film on Jiangjin Yangtze River Bridge are introduced. The smart film adopts enameled copper wires to form a grid on the surface of concrete structures.Crack monitoring can be performed by checking electrical signals passing through the copper wires grid.Once a crack appears on the structure and extending to a certain width, copper wires will be broken. And then signal cannot pass through the wires. The details of the crack, such as location, length, width, shape and propagation trend can be simulated by a graphical algorithm based on combination of the breaking wires and their intersecting points. In addition, since different ultimate tensile strain of the wires are related to different broking crack width, crack width monitoring can be achieved by setting enameled copper wires of different diameters.
