Literature review on structural health monitoring for road pavements
Structural Health Monitoring(SHM)have been employed for at least half a century in civil infrastructures; implementing damage identification strategy for aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering is the most common definition that several authors have chosen to term SHM.In the last 30-year,SHM has gained a wider acceptability not only in academia but in industry as research papers have dramatically arisen as well as owners/operators face infrastructure deterioration. In pavement engineering, specifically, visual observation can be considered as the first attempt to monitor the pavement condition through time-spaced evaluations.Nowadays, active sensors coupled with low-cost wireless sensing units are seen as a compelling technology; in that sense,it is foreseeing that the benefits from wireless sensing units will outweigh manufacturing costs. The core improvement of using sensing systems in pavement monitoring has been attributed to accuracy measurement of strain and stress distributions which are critical to understand the behaviour as well as to model the failure; on the other hand, since estimation methods are based on averaging techniques, data might not be able to detect abrupt variations in the strain profile.SHM has been suggested as an important research direction in civil engineering for the rapid, but reliable, condition screening information that can be achieved. The authors believe that next steps will be tailored to develop a system to be fully implemented on a “real-world structure which could be linked to Pavement Management System for an intelligent budget allocation.
