Seismic performance of steel buckling-restrained braced frames with novel sliding gusset connections

  Although steel buckling-restrained braced frames(BRBFs)have been widely adopted to mitigate structural damage under severe earthquakes,their seismic performance was often limited by premature yielding and rupture of the welded corner gusset connection due to additional frame action.A novel corner gusset connection,which is connected to beam and column flanges by bolted end plates but allows relative sliding deformations at the contact interfaces by providing unbonding rubber layers,is therefore proposed to minimize such a strong interaction.Cyclic tests of three steel BRBF subassemblages,two with the sliding configuration and another with the welded configuration as comparison,were conducted to verify effectiveness and reasonable configurations of the proposed scheme.It showed that significant plastic damages were observed on the welded gusset connection and its surrounding beam.Seismic performance of this specimen was limited by significant out-of-plane and local buckling of the beam.Such undesirable failure could be avoided by the sliding gusset connection,in which the specimen provided with reinforced beam flange plates exhibited satisfactory performance up to 4%drift.Such sliding scheme was found effective in minimizing the frame action-induced shear interaction at the gusset interfaces and the inelastic stress responses at the gusset interfaces.Structural behaviors of the two types of gusset connection are discussed finally.
