Viscous inertial mass dampers in the coupled tall buildings for the seismic responses control

  Recently,the inertial mass damper involved with an inertial/gyro mass component and its application in the structural engineering have been widely studied.Different realizations of the IMD share common promising features: a large apparent mass and the pseudo-negative dynamic stiffness.On the other hand,the connected control method(CCM)has been proved effective for mitigating vibration between adjacent flexible structures.This paper explores the efficacy of using an IMD in parallel with a viscous damper(termed as the VIMD)configured in the sky bridge to control the vibration of two adjacent towers under random earthquake excitation.First,numerical models of two towers are developed using a Timoshenko beam model from a benchmark model designed based on Chinese codes.Then,a stochastic optimization is performed to determine optimum damper parameters and the most effective configurations,for single and multiple objectives.At last,through the time history analysis using 14 ground motion records,the structural performances of the adjacent high-rise buildings with optimal configuration of the VIMD are evaluated.By comparing the optimal control performances between the VIMD and the uncontrolled structure,following conclusions can be drawn: due to its pseudo negative stiffness characteristics and large damper force,the VIMD can achieve better control performances,while requires a smaller damping coefficient; VIMD has better control ability on the root-mean-square(RMS)of the structural response than the peak responses.Therefore,the VIMD is demonstrated to be a good candidate as the damper in the control strategy of CCM.
