Seismic collapse assessment of steel moment resisting frame with failure considered SMA-based damper

  This study explores seismic collapse performance of steel building equipped with shape memory alloy(SMA)-based self-centering damper systems which is taking damper failure into account.A new type of SMA damper mechanical model with failure consideration has been proposed and validated with experimental results in OpenSees.Then relative pushover analysis and incremental dynamic analysis(IDA)has been conducted on the four-story case study buildings equipped with SMA dampers to illustrate the significance of damper failure and assess the structures collapse vulnerability.The analysis results shown that the frame of SMA dampers without failure consideration obviously overestimate the seismic collapse performance.Structure collapse margin ratio remarkably improved with the increase of damper ultimate deformation.
