Building damage and retrofit effectiveness evaluation of a SRC building using vertical array measurements of ambient noises

  Conventionally,the horizontal response of a building is regarded as the summation of the fundamental mode and higher modes with different frequencies in the frequency domain.Alternatively,in the time domain,it can be considered as the superposition of horizontal shearwaves vertically propagating up and down in a building.In this paper,the damage and retrofit effectiveness of a 9-story steel reinforced concrete(SRC)residential building are examined based on the shear-wave velocity of each story,which is extracted from vertical array measurements of the ambient noises measured before and after the retrofitting.We found that the inter-story shear-wave velocity traveling between the first and the second floor(i.e.,the first story)was decreased dramatically,in both the long-axis and short-axis of the building.It is due to the bulling of steels at the foot of one corner column of the first story.Besides,the shearwave velocities between the 4th to 6th floor in the short-axis component are also decreased.But there are no visible structural damages can be seen.The retrofit of this building was performed including the repair of the cracks of the nonstructural walls and the reinforcement of the collapsed column of the first story by attaching another column.We found that the inter-story shear-wave velocity of the first story are increased to almost 1.5 times in the long-axis component and 1.3 times in the short-axis component.That is to say the reinforcement method of the target building is effective.
