A performance evaluation method for stress monitoring system on ultra large ship structures

Springing and slamming of ships when sailing in waves can cause damage to hull structure of the ultra large ship, the theory and numerical techniques emerged in the past decades made it possible to estimate the damage to intact ship structures with reasonable accuracy, however,it is way too challenging to effectively predict, theoretically or even empirically.that of aged ship structures—which is the real case.To ensure the structural safety of ultra large ships, structural monitoring systems are so far the most practical and effective solution.However,real-time monitoring of the complex structures of ultra large ships, especially when a large amount of nodes are being monitored, may be very demanding of the processing capability of the hosting computer. To ensure the functionality and efficiency of such systems,a theoretical method is proposed in this paper to estimate the system hardware requirement purely incurred by the monitoring systems. An improved Delphi weighting method and an ABC classification method are combined to assess the load of each hardware component, and the results discussed together with empirical hardware requirements.
