A nonlinear model updating method for damage diagnosis of UHPSFRC column after earthquakes

  The finite element model updating method has been applied as an effective way for damage detection.To date,various model updating methods have been developed by researchers in both linear and nonlinear range.However,existing linear model updating methods can only locate and qualify the current damage in the equivalent stiffness reduction form.They are not adequate for determining the future performance of structures.In addition,although the existing nonlinear model updating methods can update the models nonlinearly and provide accurate prediction of the future performance of structures,they always require tested structures subjected to high-level excitations in order to get the nonlinear structural responses,which may cause further damages to the tested structures.This paper focuses on the challenging task of updating the nonlinear model for UHPSFRC columns damaged by earthquakes using low-level vibration tests.A nonlinear fiber section element model is constructed in OpenSees to simulate the hysteretic behavior of an UHPSFRC column.A two-stage nonlinear model updating method is proposed by using this model.This new method is designed to use the maximum and minimum strains of section fibers as the updating parameters.With the modal information extracted from the low-level vibration data as the objective function,the damage parameters related to nonlinear material model are updated by solving the constrained optimization problem.Then the updated nonlinear model can be applied not only to evaluate the current damage condition of UHPSFRC column but also predict its future behavior without causing any damage to it.Finally,the proposed method is applied to a numerical UHPSFRC column to demonstrate its effectiveness.
